Coaching Overview

“Tango and Coaching” training, CCE-approved by ICF, is designed to give you a completely different perspective on coaching and your communication with others.

Effective and inspiring coaching should be personalized, flexible, and a powerful process that follows a specific roadmap and direction. The “Tango and Coaching” training combines the insights Tango offers with the coaching process that proceeds like a reciprocal dance and builds wisdom on parallels.

The Tango, a simple dance, progresses with a leader and a follower. One person walks forward while the other walks backward. Similarly, the coaching process involves two people moving in harmony, with the coach or the client taking the lead during a simple conversation. The parallels between Tango’s simple yet rich techniques and the coaching process create a beautiful combination and a nuanced approach with astonishing results. “Tango” can, therefore, be used to explore the nature of the coaching relationship and the contested space where the coach is either a leader or follower

Competencies to be covered as defined by ICF (International Coaching Federation):

  • Establishing agreements
  • Cultivating trust and safety with the client
  • Maintaining presence during the coaching
  • Evoking awareness
  • Active Listening

The practical and philosophical connection between Tango and the following theories and methodologies is emphasized in the training.

  • Tim Gallwey developed the “Inner Game” concept
  • Gestalt Coaching approach
  • Argentine Tango’s structure and techniques
  • Body awareness, like in Pilates and Yoga
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Awareness and visualization

Afterward, practical exercises will aim to experience the essence of being a leader or a follower. Thus, the application of Tango in coaching and leadership styles will be evaluated. There are many opportunities for mutual observation, coaching, and content conversations with the participants.
There is no bias about the gender of the leader and the follower. All participants are expected to work in roles with the same/opposite genders. In addition to all this, the fun comes with learning to dance the Tango.

“Tango should be simply danced with tremendous emotion and a feeling of energy flowing between the dancers. This energy grows or diminishes as the music flows or comes to a stop. It is a private conversation. Something shared in silence, not publicly displayed. Bruno E. Romero- Origins of Argentine Tango”
